Beckie Child wants people who’ve been labeled and diagnosed with mental illness to have meaningful lives of their own choosing. To that end, Beckie has used her experiences in the mental health system to fuel her passion for mental health system transformation. Beckie has provided individual advocacy services for adults and children in Oregon’s mental health system. Additionally, Beckie has developed and operated a number of peer-run programs and organizations. She has served on a number of advisory boards at the local, state, and national levels. Currently she serves on the Oregon State Hospital’s Advisory Board but has also been a member and co-chair of the Oregon Planning and Management Advisory Council and Disability Rights Oregon’s PAIMI Council and Board of Directors. She recently served as the President of Mental Health America of Oregon’s (MHAO) Board of Directors for four years and is now the executive director for MHAO.
Beckie has provided a number of trainings and presentations on advocacy, peer-delivered services, interpersonal violence and social and family policies. She also has provided technical assistance to several peer groups who were interested in developing peer-delivered services and advocacy organizations. Beckie received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Weber State University. She also has a Master’s of Social Work Degree from Portland State University and is working on a Ph.D. in Social Work and Social Research at Portland State University.
